Characters: John Willoughby

John Willoughby is described as a handsome young man with a small estate, and seems to be romantic hero of the novel as he rescues Marianne and carries her home. "Uncommonly handsome" he has a charming voice and gallant manners.

Attracted to Marianne, he pays her great attention. Something of his real nature shows when he makes malicious fun of Marianne's admirer, Colonel Brandon. As time goes on, he is seen to have no strenght of purpouse; he leaves Marianne without explanation when Mrs. Smith discovers that he has seduced Colonel Brandon's protégé, Eliza Williams.

During a dance Marianne, who was being avoided by John, makes him tell her why he was averting her. Later he sends a letter saying that he had never being attracted to her truly. After marrying Miss Grey, who makes him unhappy, he regrets of his behavior to Marianne. When he knows that Marianne is seriously sick, he travels to Cleveland at once to find out how she is. He explains Elinor that his fiancée dedicated the letter to Marianne and made him send it., and convince her of his repentance.

Marianne's Diary - Part One

Dear Diary,
You might not know me, but I know you. My name is Marianne Dashwood and I used to live at Norland Park, a peaceful community. I have two sisters, Elinor and Margaret, and a half-brother, John, from my father’s previous marriage. Since my father died, John is now the owner of everything we possessed. He and his abominable wife Fanny Ferrars. My father asked him to look after us when he died, but his wife is a bitch and wants all our money. Now, my sisters, my mom and I are all by ourselves. I don’t really know what’s going to happen to us.
For a while, we stood at Norland Park, feeling miserable! But then, a visitor came and brought joy to our sad little lives: Mr. Edward Ferrars, Fanny’s older brother. At first, mom didn’t like because he wasn’t handsome and he was very shy, but Elinor spent a lot of time with him and I think that was the start of something new. After a certain time, mom understood him, specially because she thought he had fallen in love with her and that they would get married soon. I believed so too, but I didn’t quite like him. He was so… dead inside.
But, the second we suggested that they could be in love and get married loud enough to Fanny hear, it was a disaster. She said that neither of her brothers would ever marry someone as poor as us. That was the point where we saw that we just couldn’t stay there any longer. Luckily, our mother’s cousin, John Middleton, sent us a letter, telling that we could stay in his cottage in the county of Devon. It was very far from Fanny, so we were thrilled to go, although we knew we would miss Norland Park. And now, as we leave the only place I called home during all my life, I can’t contain the tears.

Elinor's Diary: First Chapter

Dear diary,

Considering the later events, I am really worried about my family’s future. According to the current social rules, the elder son should Always receive the inheritance, which I think is really unfair. None of my sisters are married including me. How are we supposed to live without money?

I know Jonh has promissed to my father that he would help us with money issues, but I don’t trust his wife, Fany Ferrars. He is easily influenciated by her, and she is really selfish. It’s clear as water that we are not welcome here anymore.

The only nice thing that has happened to me in the past few days is the arrival of Edward Ferrars, Fany’s brother. He’s not really handsome, but he has a kind heart. Despite the fact that my father’s just passed away, I think i’m falling for him. I feel really guilty. How am i even capable of falling in love when my father is dead? I’m really good at hiding my emotions, but that doesn’t mean i didn’t suffer.

Anyways, Mrs Ferrars wouldn’t even approve this relationship. She wants Edward to marry a girl from high society. My mom thinks that Mrs Ferrars is trying to insult me by saying things like that, which I find really outrageous. I also suspect that Fany is trying to find a way to kick us out of the house, since it belongs to her now. However, we will move faster and leave this house as soon as possible.
This is the story of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, sisters who respectively represent the "sense" and "sensibility" of the title. With their mother, their sister Margaret, and their stepbrother John, they make up the Dashwood family.
Henry Dashwood, their father, has just died. Norland Park, his estate, is inherited by John; to his chagrin, Henry has nothing but ten thousand pounds to leave to his wife and daughters. On his deathbed, he urges John to provide for them and John promises that he will do so.

I liked the plot of the story, even though the writing style is a bit boring. Its cool to see all the points of view, and to analyse wich one. At the story, Elinor represents the  “Sense” (she is complex and her fellings are very strong) and Marianne  the “Sensibility” (she is romantic and more sensibility).

Characters: Elinor Dashwood

Elinor is the oldest sister of the tree, she represents the sense whereas her sister Marianne who’s the sensibility. She is her mother’s counselor because she is able to influence her mother in the direction of prudence.

Elinor is very different from Marianne when she falls in love. Though attracted to Edward, she is cautious, telling her sister, "I am by no means sure of his regard for me." She keeps her self-control when she learns that Lucy has been secretly engaged to Edward and rightly concludes that Edward felt only a youthful infatuation for the girl.

When she hears from a servant that "Mr. Ferrars is married," Elinor shows that she is not always the calm, collected girl she appears to be. Being capable of deep devotion, she is also able to love sincerely, and at the story's end her faith in Edward has been rewarded in their marriage and subsequent happiness.

Marianne and Elinor

Marianne and Elinor are two sisters that have many diferences on their physical appearences and their temperaments. One decided to follow their heart and the other was more "sensible", ignoring their hearts please.
Elinor has a delicate complexion, regular features, and a pretty figure. She prefers the sense and many times the people see her feelings are certainly strong.
Marianne is more impressive. She is sensibility and romantic. Marianne's complexion is uncommonly brilliant; her features are all good; her smile is sweet and attractive. And Elinor feels somewhat worried because of her sister's excessive sensibility.

“Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition.”
