Characters: John Willoughby

John Willoughby is described as a handsome young man with a small estate, and seems to be romantic hero of the novel as he rescues Marianne and carries her home. "Uncommonly handsome" he has a charming voice and gallant manners.

Attracted to Marianne, he pays her great attention. Something of his real nature shows when he makes malicious fun of Marianne's admirer, Colonel Brandon. As time goes on, he is seen to have no strenght of purpouse; he leaves Marianne without explanation when Mrs. Smith discovers that he has seduced Colonel Brandon's protégé, Eliza Williams.

During a dance Marianne, who was being avoided by John, makes him tell her why he was averting her. Later he sends a letter saying that he had never being attracted to her truly. After marrying Miss Grey, who makes him unhappy, he regrets of his behavior to Marianne. When he knows that Marianne is seriously sick, he travels to Cleveland at once to find out how she is. He explains Elinor that his fiancée dedicated the letter to Marianne and made him send it., and convince her of his repentance.

  1. Hey Marianne, you should be careful with this young man. He seems to be gentle and sweet, but his appearance may trick you.
